Sri Lanka Accelerates Preparations for CRPD Review

Sri Lanka has stepped up preparations for the review of its Initial Report under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which is scheduled to take place in Geneva in August 2026. An inter-ministerial meeting was held yesterday (08) as part of the preparatory process.

The meeting was chaired by Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment, Upali Pannila, and was attended by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment, Arun Hemachandra.

Discussions focused on strengthening national coordination, updating relevant data, and advancing consultations with organizations of persons with disabilities and civil society groups.

Deputy Minister Hemachandra emphasized that protecting the rights of persons with disabilities is a national responsibility that requires the collective efforts of all sectors. He further stated that the Government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment would provide their full support to this process.
