Sri Lanka and Cyprus Move to Expand Employment Opportunities for Sri Lankan Workers

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, has announced that steps will be taken to expedite the signing of agreements aimed at creating more employment opportunities for Sri Lankan workers in Cyprus.

The Minister made these remarks during a meeting with Evagoras Vryonides on June 8.

Discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries and expanding access to the Cypriot job market for Sri Lankan workers. During the meeting, the High Commissioner expressed appreciation for Sri Lanka’s continued support to Cyprus at the international level.

Highlighting the strong demand for Sri Lankan workers in Cyprus, the High Commissioner noted that numerous job opportunities are available for qualified and trained personnel in sectors such as nursing, hospitality and tourism, agriculture, construction, and maritime services.

Minister Herath also raised concerns regarding difficulties faced by Sri Lankans who previously worked in Cyprus and have now reached the age of 65 in accessing their entitled Social Security Benefits. Responding to the Minister’s request, the High Commissioner assured that steps would be taken to address the issue promptly.

The High Commissioner also extended an invitation to Minister Herath to undertake an official visit to Cyprus.
