US$ 106 Mn Agreement Signed to Boost Hambantota Port Operations

Hambantota International Port Group has taken steps to enhance operational efficiency at the Hambantota International Port.

In this regard, HIPG signed an agreement with China-based Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. Ltd to procure Quay Cranes and Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes worth US$ 106 million. The agreement was signed at the Hilton Colombo.

The event was attended by Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Anura Karunatilaka and Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong as chief guests.

HIPG remains a key and reliable foreign investment partner in Sri Lanka, playing a significant role in the development of the country’s port and maritime sector.

Strategically located near one of the world’s busiest East–West shipping routes in the Indian Ocean, the development of Hambantota Port is expected to strengthen its position as a secure, efficient, and competitive maritime hub.

The new equipment is expected to improve cargo handling, logistics, and port services, enabling higher capacity and faster operations, while also attracting further international investment into Sri Lanka’s maritime sector.
