Special Bus Services Deployed for Sinhala and Hindu New Year Travel

Additional bus services have been deployed for passengers traveling to their hometowns and returning to Colombo during the upcoming Sinhala and Hindu New Year season, Chairman of the National Transport Commission, Sajeeva Kanakaratne, said.

He made these remarks at a media briefing held today (April 8) at the Government Information Department to inform the public about the transport plan for the 2026 Sinhala and Hindu New Year period.

Special transport services will operate from tomorrow (April 9) until April 21. From April 9 to 13, transport facilities will be provided for passengers traveling from Colombo and surrounding areas to outstation destinations. From April 15 to 21, services will be focused on transporting passengers returning to Colombo.

The Chairman noted that the average daily passenger volume during this period is expected to reach around 250,000. In addition, a separate fleet of 50 buses has been prepared from the Colombo area to be deployed in locations with high passenger demand.

He further stated that all leave, except for essential duties, has been cancelled for transport staff during this period.
