Bay of Bengal Depression Approaches Sri Lanka; Heavy Rainfall Warning Issued

The Meteorological Department says a deep depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal is located about 160 kilometres east of Batticaloa as of 1.00 p.m. today (09).

According to the Department, the system is likely to move northwestwards and cross the coast between Jaffna and Trincomalee tomorrow (10) evening.

As a result, rainfall exceeding 100 mm is expected in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Heavy rain or thundershowers exceeding 100 mm are likely in the Mullaitivu, Jaffna, Vavuniya, Mannar and Kilinochchi districts of the Northern Province, as well as in some areas of the Trincomalee district in the Eastern Province.

The Department further stated that rainfall exceeding 50 mm may occur at times in the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts.

Meanwhile, the public has been advised to avoid fishing and navigation activities in both deep and shallow sea areas around the island until further notice.
