The British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, His Excellency Andrew Patrick, met with the Speaker of Parliament of Sri Lanka, Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, at the Parliamentary premises recently.
H.E. Andrew Patrick conveyed his best wishes to Dr. Wickramaratne and handed over a letter of congratulations from the Speaker of the UK Parliament. The High Commissioner also shared plans for an upcoming visit to Sri Lanka by a high level delegation of British Parliamentarians, including the Speaker of UK Parliament. He welcomed the revival of the Sri Lanka - United Kingdom Parliamentary Friendship Association in the Tenth Parliament, emphasizing its importance in strengthening bilateral ties.
The speaker Dr. Wickramaratne expressed his gratitude for the longstanding support provided by the United Kingdom across various sectors. He also acknowledged the UK's assistance in the recent debt restructuring program. The Speaker also commended the significant contributions of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy and the British Council Sri Lanka to Parliament and expressed anticipation of continued assistance in the future.
Further discussions focused on topics such as capacity building programs for Parliamentarians, functioning of Parliamentary Committees, and Parliament outreach programs.
The Secretary General of Parliament, Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera, also attended the meeting.
