Accordingly 17 tractors and 13 compactors are daily used for removing garbage and refuse that get piled up during Perahera. In addition to those vehicles, nine trishaws had been used to collect and remove refuse left behind by Esala Perahera viewers, Deputy Mayor Sena Dissanayaka said.
The collection of garbage during the Perahera has increased from 140 tonnes to 200 tonnes daily, Deputy Mayor Dissanayaka said, 180 workers had been deployed for cleaning the city during the pageant under the directions of Mayor Mahindra Ratwatte.
He also said that at least 25 water tanks had been installed for the use of the perahera viewers and that all eating houses were inspected to ascertain that they supplied hygienic and clean food to the people.
