The paddy purchasing program is launched coordinated by the Prime Minister's office under the supervision of the Food Security Ministry. Ten million kilograms of paddy were purchased from Nochchiyagama, Thambuttegama, Talawa, Rambewa, Kekirawa, Medawachchiya, Palwehera and Kandalama areas.
PMD have opened 27 paddy purchasing centres in the Anuradhapura District and the 2014/2015 Maha season paddy stocks at divisional stores are being transferred to Oyamaduwa and Srawasthipura storage complexes to provide adequate storage facilities.
Payments will be made directly to farmers for their paddy sold to the PMB through the Bank of Ceylon and the People's Bank without delay. There were instances that farmers were inconvenienced as some bank branches were deducting arrears of previous loans contrary to instructions to banks by the Prime Minister's office.
The Regional Manager said farmers could complain any discrepancy in the paddy purchasing program and delays in expediting bank transactions on 025-2222114 and 0773948396.
