    Increase in compensation payment for damages caused by wild elephants

     It has been proposed to increase the compensation payment for damages caused by wild elephants to Rs. 200,000 for a death caused by wild elephant attack and Rs. 200,000 for a permanent disabilities (without considering the age limit as at present), Rs. 75,000 for physical injuries, and Rs. 100,000 for house and property damages, and to assign the payment to a committee chaired by the District Secretary to minimize delays in payment and to establish a Committee of Appeal chaired by the Director General of Wildlife to consider appeals forwarded by those who are not satisfied with the decisions of the above committee.

     
    The above compensation was last amended in 2004. Accordingly, the total compensation payment is around Rs. 25-35 million The proposal was made by Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, Minister of Sustainable Development and Wildlife, and was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
