Dr. Nanda Malini, the legendary Sri Lankan singer affectionately known as the “Voice of the Nation” for her unparalleled contribution to the country’s music industry, passed away yesterday afternoon (20) at the age of 82.
Born on August 23, 1943, in Aluthgama, Nanda Malini began her musical journey through the children’s programme of Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. She later entered the field of film playback singing with the song “Galana Gangaki Jeevithe” in the film Ran Muthu Duwa.
Through landmark musical creations such as “Sathyaye Geethaya,” “Pawana,” and “Hemanthayedi,” she made an outstanding contribution to Sinhala music and earned widespread recognition both locally and internationally.
During her illustrious career, she received numerous national and international accolades, including 12 Sarasavi Awards and 10 Presidential Awards.
Her remains will lie at her residence in Nawala from 10.00 a.m. tomorrow (21). The final rites are scheduled to be held at the Borella Public Cemetery at 5.00 p.m. on Saturday, August 22.
