A special narcotics testing programme for bus drivers and conductors has been launched with the aim of improving safety and service quality in public transportation.
The programme, implemented under the Road Safety Plan of the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, conducted one phase of inspections yesterday (26) at the Nugegoda Bus Stand.
The random inspections were carried out using a mobile laboratory bus under the supervision of Dr. Lionel Muhandiramge of the National Transport Medical Institute.
During the operation, 172 bus drivers and conductors were tested, of whom five were found to have used dangerous narcotic substances.
