Deputy Defence Minister Inspects Navy’s Maritime Security Operations in Galle

Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) inspected Sri Lanka Navy facilities supporting maritime security operations for merchant vessels during a visit to the Pettigalawatta Armoury Complex in Galle on 20 October 2026.

Accompanied by Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Damian Fernando, the Deputy Minister reviewed the facilities provided for foreign private maritime security companies to store weapons and equipment used by security teams deployed aboard merchant vessels. These facilities support the Navy’s Onboard Security Team (OBST) operations.

The Sri Lanka Navy began independently conducting OBST support operations on 3 October 2025 under agreements with foreign private maritime security companies. Over the past year, these operations have generated approximately USD 3.32 million in foreign exchange earnings, contributing to the national economy.

Currently, 28 foreign private maritime security companies, operating through 10 local agents, obtain the necessary facilities and services from the Sri Lanka Navy for their maritime security operations. These activities are conducted under the full supervision of the Ministry of Defence.

During the visit, the Deputy Minister assessed the progress of the operations and commended the Navy for its contribution to the national economy through the successful implementation of these activities within a relatively short period. He also issued instructions to ensure the continued efficient and effective conduct of the operations.

Presidential Advisor on Legal Affairs and Senior Attorney-at-Law J. M. Wijebandara, Additional Secretary (Civil Security and Development) of the Ministry of Defence Indika Wijegunawardena, and senior officials of the Ministry of Defence and Sri Lanka Navy were also present.
