Marking a new chapter in Sri Lanka’s urban transport sector, construction of the country’s first Metro Bus depot commenced today (4) in Kadawatha.
The project was inaugurated under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, Dr. Prasanna Gunasena. The depot is being built near the Kadawatha–Ganemulla main road in the Mahara electorate of the Gampaha District, close to a Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) depot. The construction is estimated to cost Rs. 102 million and is scheduled for completion by July 30, 2026.
This development follows the recent launch of a pilot Metro Bus service using 10 buses. The service is expected to be expanded from August, increasing operations to 122 buses across six main routes to enhance capacity and efficiency.
Funded by the Government of Sri Lanka and implemented under the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, the project also involves private sector participation through Metro Transit (Pvt) Ltd to deliver efficient public transport services.
Authorities are also planning long-term infrastructure improvements, including bus stops, integrated payment systems, depot facilities, and better connectivity with other transport services. In addition to Kadawatha, new depots are planned in Ekala, Ratmalana, and Talangama, bringing the total number of Metro depots in the Western Province to four.
Addressing the media, Deputy Minister Dr. Gunasena stated that the government is taking significant steps to modernize and improve public transport services. He emphasized ongoing reforms to restructure the SLTB, enhance human and physical resources, ensure transparency in recruitment and promotions, and minimize corruption.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Members of Parliament representing the Gampaha District, officials from Metro Transit (Pvt) Ltd, and representatives from relevant institutions.
