Deputy Minister of Defence Aruna Jayasekara stated that 123 kilograms of heroin were discovered in a fishing vessel brought to Dikovita Fisheries Harbour today (16).
The Deputy Minister made these remarks while inspecting the stock of narcotics seized by authorities at the harbour this morning. He said the estimated street value of the drugs is nearly Rs. 300 million.
The fishing vessel had been seized by the Sri Lanka Navy Long Range Naval Fleet on suspicion of transporting narcotics and was brought to the harbour along with five suspects.
Jayasekara emphasized that under the government’s policy, those involved in drug trafficking will be brought to justice through a systematic process. He also noted that necessary legal amendments will be introduced to strengthen action against narcotics traffickers and support law enforcement agencies.
The public is encouraged to provide information related to narcotics to authorities by calling the hotlines 1818 and 1997, which he said would greatly assist the government’s efforts to combat drug trafficking.
