The Sri Lankan Youth Athletics Team, which delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 Asian U20 Athletics Championship in Hong Kong, returned to the country today (02) and received a warm welcome at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake.
The team brought glory to Sri Lanka by winning a total of eight medals—two gold, two silver, and four bronze—and securing eighth place in the overall medal standings ahead of several strong Asian nations.
On the instructions of Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage, a delegation of ministry officials attended the airport to welcome the athletes. Officials of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, representatives of Sri Lanka Athletics, and family members of the athletes were also present.
Among the standout performers were Tarushi Abhisheka, who won gold in the women’s 1500m and bronze in the women’s 800m, and Ransini Perera, who claimed gold in the women’s 200m event.
The achievement has been hailed as a significant milestone for Sri Lankan athletics and a testament to the talent and dedication of the country’s young athletes.
