According to the most recent official reports, some 9,000 people were injured, many of them remain in serious condition, and hospitals are overcrowded by the amount of people admitted, while the shortage of medicines and even blood for transfusion prevails.
The death toll in Nepal can be increased by 74 fatalities in the three adjacent Indian states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengala, as well as 25 fatal victims in the Chinese neighboring region of Tibet, Prensa Latina News Agency reported.
Official agencies of the United Nations also report terrible tolls: there are eight million victims, of whom 1.4 million are in an urgent need for food and 1.3 children need humanitarian aid.
The huge earthquake also seriously damaged some 16,000 schools and more than 500,000 houses and only in the most affected districts 90 percent of health facilities were destroyed.
The business research company IHS estimated that reconstruction works could total some $5 billion USD, which represents a fifth of the Gross Domestic Product.
Prime Minister Sushil Koirala said that the scale of the tragedy has gone beyond the Governmentâ€Ös means to handle it and also that as search works continue death toll might reach 10,000 people.
