    President, PM holds special discussion on 19A

    A special discussion had been held Wednesday (08) night between President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe concerning issues over 19th Amendment to the Constitution after the weekly Cabinet meeting.

    The main constitutional proposals of the 19th Amendment include the transformation of the Presidential form of government to a Presidential-Parliamentary system of government and the restoration of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution.

     

    The much talked about 19th amendment, to reduce power of Sri Lankan President is yet to get parliament's approval. The bill is due be taken up for debate in Parliament on the 9 and 10 April 2015.

     

    The proposed legislation needs to get the support of all major political parties in parliament, in order to be enacted into law.

     

    The Draft Bill on the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was approved by the Cabinet of Sri Lanka at an emergency Cabinet meeting summoned by President Maithripala Sirisena last month (March).
