The Government has planned to establish a research and training complex in the faculty of agriculture in the University of Jaffna with the funds provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Accordingly, the proposal made by Lakshman Kiriella, Minister of Higher Education and Highways, to award the contract for providing consultancy services to the above project as recommended by the Standing Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
The Government official news portal is maintains by the New Media Unit of the Department of Government Information and it was titled "news.lk" and commenced in mid1996 and release to Internet from March 01st, 1997.
