New UK trade policies to boost Sri Lanka’s exports

Sri Lanka is poised to gain substantial economic benefits under the United Kingdom’s newly introduced Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS), a move that aligns with the Sri Lankan government's ongoing economic development efforts.

The DCTS, which comes into effect this year, will grant duty-free access to a wide range of Sri Lankan exports entering the UK market. Key sectors expected to benefit include garments, food products, and electronics  industries that play a vital role in Sri Lanka’s export economy.

This preferential tariff system is designed to enhance trade with developing nations by making their exports more competitive in the UK. For Sri Lanka, this means increased market access, reduced costs for exporters, and improved global competitiveness.

Industry experts believe the scheme will not only open new avenues for local manufacturers and exporters but also contribute to job creation, stimulate small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and accelerate overall economic growth.

The UK remains one of Sri Lanka’s key trading partners, and this policy shift is seen as a timely opportunity to strengthen bilateral trade ties and support Sri Lanka’s recovery and long-term economic resilience.
