    Sri Lanka identifies childhood injury as fourth leading cause of child deaths Featured

    In Sri Lanka, childhood injury has been identified as the fourth leading cause of death among children less than five years of age, Consultant Community Physician and National Programme Manager of the Maternal and Child Morbidity and Mortality Surveillance of Family Health Bureau Dr. Kapila Jayaratne said.


    "One in five hospital admissions (of children) are due to accidents. In 2012 around 23, 762 children in Sri Lanka had been hospitalized due to dog bites. Around 2,500 persons die due to accidents annually and over 250 of them are children. In 2012, 774 pedestrians had died due to accidents and 63 of them were children. Children often die due to asphyxiation while grown up adolescent children mostly die due to drowning," Dr. Jayaratne further pointed out.


    Annually 600 children die due to accidents in Sri Lanka. One child is hospitalized due to an accident related injury every two minutes while 32 children are hospitalised each hour Around 740 children are hospitalised per day which amounts to 270,000 a year, he noted.


    Dr.Jayaratne also pointed out that several studies conducted at the Lady Ridgeway Children's Hospital (LRH) has revealed that injuries sustained within the home and on the road amount to 56 percent and eight percent respectively, of all causes of injury.


    The Government spends Rs.4,100 when a person gets admitted to a state hospital. This amount excludes special treatment, surgeries etc..The Government spends Rs.1,100 million to treat children with injuries.
