New Year reflects stronger bond of brotherhood - Media Minister

    April 14, 2015

The Sinhala-Tamil New Year is the only nationally significant cultural event, which enriches festivity by turning the entire island in to one carnival. This wonderful day dawns year by year reinvigorating our lives with fresh attitudes, Mass Media Minister Gayantha Karunathilake said in a New Year message.

It said, Sri Lankans have grandiosely celebrated from time immemorial the dawning of New Year, which enhances native thinking as well as social values.

New Year rituals blended with astrology, traditional knowledge, cultural elements and ethics add colour to the New Year.

All Sri Lankans unanimously accept and follow the New Year rituals hailed in the society from ancient times. They perform the rituals on auspicious times. These rituals performed at the same time with the same will by an entire nation have become unique to Sri Lankans. It reflects a stronger bond of brotherhood.

The modern society undoubtedly follows the auspicious times linked with the rituals as social norms and ethics connected to New Year rituals still prevail in the society. Against the socio-political transformation taken place with the dawning of New Year. I hope this New Year will strengthen the unity of the nation while realizing the public trust in good governance.
