Kelani River water level rising, residents cautioned

    December 27, 2014

The Disaster Management Centre has called upon the residents of low lying areas affiliated to  Kelani River to be cautious due to rapidly rising water levels.

The rapid increase in water level of the Kelani River is a result of the torrential rain experienced in the catchment areas of the River.  The water capacity of the Castlereigh and Maoussakelle Reservoirs is increasing following the heavy rain falls.

As such, it is reported that the Castlereigh Reservoir is overflowing while the Maoussakelle Reservoir has reached the spill level. In addition the Norton Bridge, Lakshapana and Canyon Reservoirs are also overflowing. Water from all these Reservoirs flow into the Kelani River, increasing its water level.

Therefore DNC has issued instructions to people of low lying areas around the Kelani River to be vigilant.
