Work on the Northern Expressway is intended to be carried out as a priority project under the mega development drive launched by the Government. The intention is to create a broad road network in the North and East as well as within the internal parts of the country.

It is intended to implement the Northern Expressway Project in eight stages and work on two stages is being planned to be mooted within the next two months.

The Northern Expressway which will have four lanes is intended to be expanded to six lanes. There will be 10 interchanges. The plan also includes to develop Gampaha, Mirigama, Rambukkana and Dambulla as main urban economic centres. Another target is to develop tourism in the Kandy, Dambulla and Kurunegala Districts.
