The National conference on the World Habitat Day will be held Monday, at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. A National Housing Policy for the country will be launched for the first time in Sri Lanka on World Habitat Day at this national conference.
This National Policy has identified the State Policy for fulfilling the housing requirements of low income earning and middle income earning families. The presentation of house ownership deeds for 500 persons from the Colombo, Kalutara and Gampaha districts will also be made at this function.
The objective of the National Policy would be to ensure the right to live in an adequate, stable, qualitative, affordable, sustainable, environmentally friendly and secure house, with services for creating a high living standard on the timely needs of the people.
In addition to this event, ministry officials have organised several programs including presentation of certificates to 100 technicians who have undergone training programmes organized by the Construction and Development Institution and 5 contractors involved in community contracts, children’s art and drama competitions, cricket matches and cultural shows.
World Habitat Day is observed every year on the first Monday of October throughout the world since 1986.
