Mangroves have been declared as natural nature reserves. There are 21 Mangrove varieties in Sri Lanka near Lagoons and 48 near estuaries.
The Ministry of Sustainable Energy and Environment has launched a special projects to protect Mangroves which protect natural environment.
Accordingly a Gazette notification was issued recently in Chillaw declaring Mangroves as nature reserves under the patronage of Minister Susil Premajayantha. (ST/KH)
