    Mega 'Sharamadana' to renovate 20 km long irrigation canal

    As a part of their community welfare initiatives, Sri Lanka Army troops renovated a 20 km-long irrigation canal that supplies water to farm lands in Pandivettiaru in the general areas of Thunukkai and Vavunikulam on 7th September. According to Army media, about 700 Army personnel together with more than 200 civilians were involved in the 'Sharamadana' (self-help) program.

    The canal on the Southern bund of the Vavunikulam tank is one of the three major canals that take water to the surrounding fields from the 40,000 acre reservoir. The canal which carries water to the Thunukkai area was found to be in need of repair before monsoons begin. Taking the lead, troops under 65 Division together with members of 9 farmers' associations renovated the 20 km canal. More than 2,650 acres of land is put under the plough from the water of this reservoir during both, 'Yala' and 'Maha' seasons. Regional irrigation and state officials also provided support to this community empowerment initiative of the Sri Lanka Army.

    Troops of 10 Sri Lanka Light Infantry, 19 Sri Lanka Light Infantry, 21 (V) Sri Lanka Light Infantry, 15 (V) Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, 1 Gajaba Regiment, 11 Gajaba Regiment, 20 (V) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment and 7 Sri Lanka National Guard of above Brigades were involved in the 'Sharamadana' program.
