    Fisher families compensated by hotel

    The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development has been requested by several fishermen families engaged in beach-seine fisheries that they have been deprived of their livelihood due to the construction of a new hotel complex in Ahungalla beach.

    Accordingly, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera had a discussion with the hotel management and as a result, they agreed to compensate five 5 fishermen families for their lost livelihoods.

    The award of compensation amounting to Rs 1.5 million for each family was held on 06th September at the Ministry under the patronage of the Minister with the participation of the Secretary to the Ministry and the hotel management.

    The Minister also mentioned that another grant of Rs 500,000 will be made to the families deprived of their livelihood due to this hotel complex, to cultivate the species of Milk fish (Vekkaya) which is used as bait in fishing. He also mentioned that a suitable land for this purpose has been identified from the Madu- river area.

    Minister Amaraweera also emphasized that the government does not allow the implementation of development projects at the cost of damaging the public. The government will always take action to compensate and provide relief to the affected, said the Minister.
