    Rs.902 million released to settle teacher’s salary increments and arrears

    According to the instructions given by the Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam to take immediate measures for settling the long awaited salary arrears and increments, the ministry of education has taken action to release rupees 902.94 million covering 9 provincial councils for settling the teachers’ salary arrears and increments due from 2006.


    The problem of placing in the correct salary scales and inability to pay the salary increments was there due to the long delay of getting approval for the new service minutes of the Sri Lanka Teacher Service and Sri Lanka Principals’ Service along with all the other service minutes according to the circular No. 6/2006 during the last administrative period.


    The minister had instructed the officers to take steps to rectify this situation immediately and pay the salary arrears and the increments. Accordingly, Rupees 902.94 million has been sent to the Provincial Directors of Education covering the 9 provinces to be paid to the teachers in the national schools, assisted schools and the Pirivenas.


    The total amount of 902 million rupees have already been dispatched to the provinces in order to pay the salary arrears and increments proportionately 212.77 million rupees to the Western Province, 76.16 million rupees to the Central Province, 41.12 million rupees to the North Central Province, 170.94 million rupees to the North Western Province, 41.04 million rupees to the Uva Province, 146.80 million rupees to the Southern Province, 98.88 million rupees to the Eastern Province, 107.38 million rupees to the Sabaragamuwa Province and 7.82 million rupees to the Northern Province.
