According to the Minister, the main purpose of this Cabinet paper is to reduce the spread of oral cancer in the country. The oral cancers are rapidly spreading among Sri Lankans at present.
Steps would be taken to increase the tax on cigarettes, and prevent illegal cigarettes.
"Nearly, Rs.147 billion has to be spent for the treatments for the patients of smoking. The 90 per cent tax is increased in 2016 and further 50 per cent is expected to be increased by 2017. Though the cigarette companies are closed, we can build up this economy", minister added.
