He entered politics in 1948 as a trade unionist, was a Cabinet Minister, and a Councillor in the Colombo Municipal Council. He joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in 1956.

A senior member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and former Governor of Western Province Alavi Moulana passed away last evening (June 15) at the age of 84 while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo.
