    Defence Secretary graces SLAVF scholarship awarding ceremony

    Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi was the chief guest at a scholarship awarding ceremony organized by the Sri Lank Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) at the BMICH last evening (09).

    Scholarships were awarded to children of SLAVF War Hero families. Financial incentives worth Rs. 10.8 million were awarded as scholarships among 566 students who had succeeded at public exams.

     

    As a symbolic gesture Secretary presented scholarships to several children during the ceremony. 274 Grade 5 scholarship achievers were awarded with scholarships worth Rs 15,000.00 each while 261 students who had succeeded at the G.C.E. A/L exam received Rs 20,000.00 each. Scholarships each worth Rs 50,000.00 were presented to 31university entrants.

     

    Speaking at the event Secretary Hettiarachchi praised the SLAVF's effort in assisting to uplift the living standards of its men and their families. He stressed the importance of sports and said that sports and education should go together and requested the parents to assist their children to do so. He reminded those present of the duties of parents in bringing out and developing the innate talents of their children. He asked the children to strive hard to build a better tomorrow.

     

    The SLAVF with a history spanning over 134 years has a strength of about 65,000 men under 100 Battalions. 140 officers and 3728 other rankers of the SLAVF made the supreme sacrifice during the humanitarian operations while 168 officers and 3642 other rankers had sustained injuries and became disable.

     

    Chairperson of the Seva Vanitha Unit of the MoD Mrs. Wasantha Gunawardane, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Commandant of the SLAVF Major General H.C.P Goonetilleke, deputy commandant, senior military officers and a large number of War Hero family members were present at the occasion.
