The rainfall recorded in Trincomalee and Batticaloa were 79.8 millimetres and 54.7 millimetres respectively. Kandy recorded a rainfall of 51.7 mm while Badulla recorded 31 mm, Anuradhapura recorded 28 milometres of rainfall.
Spill gates of 22 of the main reservoirs in the country have been opened. Among them are ten tanks in Anuradhapura and nine in Batticaloa.
The Lunugamvehera and Veheragala reservoirs in Hambantota and the Deduru Oya in Kurunegala are also among them. All spill gates of the Rajanganaya and Nachchaduwa reservoirs have also been opened.
While the Nuwarawewa has overflowed due to the heavy rainfall,access roads to the sacred city are also inundated due to the banks of the Malwathu Oya giving way.
The prevalent heavy rains have had a heavier impact in the North. Mannar had recorded a rainfall of 115 mm as of 12 noon Sunday.
According to the Disaster Management Centre around 19,916 persons belonging to 6,310 families in Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Killinochchi, Trincomalee, Puttalam and Gampaha districts have been affected by floods while around 2,600 persons have been displaced. Several entry roads to Jaffna are also obstructed owing to the heavy rains
Three camps in Kilinochchi and eight camps Mullaitivu are in operation to house the displaced persons while A relief camp has been set up in Puttalam to house 757 of the families.
The Disaster Management Centre says that 1251 families in the Gampaha District also have been affected by the inclement weather.
