Vice Minister for the Office of the Prime Minister of Thailand Pays Courtesy Call on Sri Lankan Prime Minister

Hon. General (Rtd.) Nipat Thonglek, Vice Minister for the Office of the Prime Minister of Thailand, paid a courtesy call on Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya at the Prime Minister’s Office on February 10, 2025.

Vice Minister briefed the Prime Minister on his productive discussions with senior government officials, particularly with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), regarding the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defense exchanges between the two countries.

During the meeting, both sides engaged in discussions on efforts to combat human trafficking. Prime Minister Amarasuriya extended her appreciation to the Government of Thailand for its assistance in the rescue operations of Sri Lankans trafficked in Myanmar and sought further support in securing the release of 18 more Sri Lankans currently in distress.

The discussions also covered the Thailand-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the strengthening of economic ties. Vice Minister Thonglek commended the ongoing collaboration between the chambers of commerce of both nations, emphasizing the importance of fostering closer trade and investment relations.

The meeting was attended by H.E. Paitoon Mahapannaporn, Ambassador of Thailand to Sri Lanka, along with the visiting delegation from the Kingdom of Thailand. The Sri Lankan delegation included Mr. Pradeep Saputhanthri, Secretary to the Prime Minister; Ms. Sagarika Bogahawatta, Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister; Ms. Sashikala Premawardhane, Director-General of the Southeast & Central Asia Division; and Ms. Thilini Ihalage, Director of the Southeast & Central Asia Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
