Students to Return as School Premises Released After 35 Years

A school that had been under military occupation since 1990 has been officially released for educational purposes on 30 September 2025, paving the way for its long-awaited restoration and development.

Originally established as a Ramakrishna Mission School, the institution was converted into a government school by Gazette Notification dated 23 July 1962. Following severe damage caused by the 1978 cyclone, the school was relocated to its present site, and academic activities resumed in 1979.

At the time the premises were taken over for use as a military camp in 1990, the school had approximately 800 students from Grade 01 to Grade 11. During the period of military occupation, classes were temporarily conducted at Vandarumoolai Madhya Maha Vidyalaya, Devapuram Gajamugan Vidyalaya, and on several private lands. With the active support of the community, the school was later re-established on about one acre of land near the reservoir along Murakkottansenai Main Road.

Currently, the school faces serious challenges due to flooding and overcrowding, which have significantly disrupted teaching and learning activities.

The total extent of the land now released measures two acres and includes two buildings of 100 x 20 feet each, one building of 110 x 20 feet, and another measuring 40 x 20 feet.

Accordingly, 196 students from the primary section—112 boys and 84 girls—along with their teachers, are scheduled to be transferred to the released premises on 10 February 2026.

Under the 2025 maintenance programme, Rs. 2 million has been allocated to provide toilet and drinking water facilities. With the support of parents, seven classrooms have been repainted, while a 140-metre boundary fence has also been constructed on one side of the school with community assistance.
