Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), F. U. Wootler stated that strict legal action will be taken against individuals who irresponsibly circulate false and unethical information at a time when the entire nation is united in facing the current disaster situation.
He noted that the Criminal Investigation Department has already received several complaints regarding the circulation of misinformation that causes fear and panic among the public and that the Computer Crime Investigation Division has commenced investigations into these complaints.
Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), F. U. Wootler made these remarks while attending the media briefing held today (01) at the Defence Headquarters.
The Police Media Spokesperson noted that, at a time when the government is working with full commitment to ensure the continuous delivery of services and supplies for the safety and well-being of the public in the post-disaster period, certain individuals have shown a tendency to circulate false and unverified information on social media.
Issuing and sharing statements that create fear and panic among the public is a serious wrongdoing, he said, adding that the dissemination of false information is a punishable offense.
Therefore, on behalf of the Police Department, he respectfully appealed to the public not to circulate false and unethical information during this challenging time when the entire country must remain united.
ASP Wootler further stated that some crimes have been reported from affected areas, including temporary shelters. He emphasized that the law will be strictly enforced against anyone involved in rape, unlawful entry, theft, robbery or any other offense, as stipulated in the Sri Lankan Penal Code. He added that the government expects the respectful cooperation of all citizens in support of the coordinated operations being carried out for the welfare of disaster-affected people.
