Director General of the Department of Meteorology, Athula Karunanayake
Although the heavy rainfall has subsided, water from areas around hydroelectric power plants in the central highlands is gradually moving downstream. Therefore, the public is urged to act with constant vigilance regarding statements issued by the Department of Irrigation concerning flood situations, Director General of the Department of Meteorology Athula Karunanayake has advised.
At present, the ground across the country is saturated and there is a possibility of localized flooding in some areas. He emphasised the importance of being alert while returning to one’s homes under these conditions.
Additionally, warnings remain in effect along the coastline from Trincomalee to Kankasanturai and Puttalam. Accordingly, the public, particularly those involved in fishing and maritime activities, are advised to refrain from such operations today, Director General Athula Karunanayake informed the fishing community.
Although the direct impact of the cyclone has passed, its residual effects continue. Wind speeds remain high, reaching up to 50 km/h and sea waves are rising to 2–3 metres, he noted.
In other sea areas, wind speeds have decreased. Therefore, as per statements issued by the Department of Fisheries, discussions with the department can guide whether fishing and maritime operations may safely commence, the Director General further stated.
