Sri Lanka has reaffirmed its commitment to the core principles of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), including peace, sovereignty, equality and the collective voice of developing nations.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Arun Hemachandra made these remarks while addressing the High-Level Commemorative Meeting held in Belgrade, Serbia, to mark the 65th anniversary of the First Conference of Heads of State or Government of Non-Aligned Countries.
As a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement, Sri Lanka continues to uphold the principles and values of the Movement, the Deputy Minister said.
He noted that, under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Sri Lanka continues to pursue an independent and principled foreign policy based on constructive engagement with all countries, respect for sovereignty, multilateralism and peaceful coexistence.
Deputy Minister Hemachandra also stressed the importance of solidarity among nations in responding to conflicts, humanitarian emergencies, natural disasters and economic crises.
He called for stronger representation of developing countries in global institutions and advocated for a fairer and more equitable international financial system.
Sri Lanka also reaffirmed its support for a just and lasting settlement of the question of Palestine, in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
The Deputy Minister noted that the 65th anniversary of the Belgrade Conference provides an opportunity not only to reflect on the history and achievements of the Non-Aligned Movement, but also to renew its unity and relevance in addressing future global challenges.
