The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea (South Korea) to Sri Lanka, Miyon Lee, recently met Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne at Parliament to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between the two countries.
During the meeting, the Speaker expressed appreciation for the long-standing friendship between Sri Lanka and South Korea and thanked the Korean Government for its continued support during Sri Lanka's economic crisis and ongoing development efforts. He also highlighted the significant contribution made by employment opportunities for Sri Lankan workers in South Korea to the country's economy.
The Speaker briefed the Ambassador on the Government's initiatives to eliminate corruption, strengthen transparency and good governance, promote national reconciliation, create a peaceful and investment-friendly environment, and attract foreign investment. He also invited Korean investors to explore investment opportunities in Sri Lanka, while highlighting the Government's efforts to develop the tourism sector.
Ambassador Lee reaffirmed South Korea's commitment to continuing its support for Sri Lanka through knowledge sharing and cooperation across various sectors. She also expressed South Korea's willingness to support Sri Lanka's anti-corruption initiatives.
The discussions also focused on the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and the Republic of Korea, which will be celebrated next year. Both sides noted that the milestone would provide an opportunity to further strengthen bilateral ties, including expanding parliamentary exchange programmes.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of both countries' commitment to enhancing their long-standing friendship and cooperation.
