The Colombo–Katunayake flight has been launched as part of the government’s initiative to strengthen domestic air travel and boost tourism. Operated by Cinnamon Airlines, which already runs water-based flights in Sri Lanka, the new service provides a fast and comfortable link between Katunayake Airport and Colombo city, benefiting both tourists and the business community.
The inaugural flight, a Cessna 208, flew from Katunayake Airport to the Cinnamon Lake Side Pier, carrying Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Mr. Janitha Ruwan Kodituwakku, Deputy Minister of Tourism Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe, Civil Aviation Authority Chairman Mr. Sunil Jayaratne, and several dignitaries. Captain Indika Premadasa piloted the aircraft, with Isuru Munasinghe as co-pilot.
Speaking at the launch, Minister Bimal Ratnayake emphasized the government’s commitment to developing domestic air services. He encouraged Cinnamon Airlines to expand operations to other airports, including Palaly, assuring full government support for such initiatives.
