Devnimori Relics Exposition Strengthens India–Sri Lanka Bilateral Ties

The sacred Devnimori Relics of Lord Buddha from Gujarat, India, are on public exposition at Colombo’s Gangaramaya Temple from 4–11 February 2026. Acting High Commissioner of India Dr Sathyanjal Pandey highlighted that this is the first time these relics, discovered in 1960, are being displayed outside India.

The exposition, inaugurated on Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Day, reflects the enduring spiritual, cultural, and bilateral ties between the two countries.

Key relics on display include a casket containing holy ashes, a copper box, and inscriptions in Brahmi script. The High Commissioner emphasized that India’s support for Sri Lanka extends beyond cultural exchanges, citing ongoing initiatives such as solar electrification of over 8,000 Buddhist temples and Pirivenas, development of the Sacred City of Anuradhapura under Indian grant assistance, and the hosting of international Buddhist summits and cultural programs.

These efforts, along with previous collaborations on Vesak Day celebrations and pilgrim connectivity, underscore India’s commitment to strengthening people-to-people ties and promoting Buddhist heritage in Sri Lanka.
