The new building of the Colombo North Division Children and Women's Bureau, constructed with modern facilities within the Modara Police, was opened yesterday (21) under the patronage of the IGP, Attorney-at-Law, Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya.
The aim of establishing the Children and Women's Bureau in a systematic manner with modern facilities is to create a suitable environment for children and women in the area to file a complaint regarding a problem they have encountered or a crime they have faced, while protecting their privacy, and to create a suitable working environment for them to act to prevent crimes against them.
The project to modernize these Children and Women's Bureaus is being implemented across the island under the financial support of the Japanese Government of the United Nations Population Fund with the direct involvement of the Embassy of Japan in this country. Mr. Ohashi Kenji, First Secretary and Head of the Economic and Development Cooperation Section of the Embassy of Japan, participated as a chief guest for this occasion.
Facilities such as a designated area for mothers who come to file complaints to breastfeed their children, and areas for children to play and women to rest have also been prepared in this building.
Senior DIG Sanjeewa Dharmarathne in charge of the Western Province, Senior Superintendent of Police B.A. Rohan Pushpakumara in charge of the Colombo North Division, Director of the Child and Women's Bureau, Senior Superintendent of Police H.W.I.S. Muthumala, Executive Director of World Vision, which provided construction support, Dr. Dhanan Senathirajah, as well as OICs and officers of the Colombo North Division participated in this event.
