A meeting between the members of the “Clean Sri Lanka” Presidential Task Force, chaired by Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, was held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (12).
The meeting focused extensively on the current progress of the “Clean Sri Lanka” programme and its future plans.
Particular attention was given to the new waste management programme being implemented through all local authorities across the island. The meeting also discussed the establishment of a Project Management Unit within the Presidential Secretariat to coordinate and oversee the implementation of the programme, while briefing Task Force members on its progress.
Discussions also focused on transforming several selected cities into model cities and implementing a range of programmes within the Colombo Municipal Council area, including waste management, urban beautification, the cleaning of canals, the modernisation of sewerage systems and the proper restoration and maintenance of parks. The need to establish a dedicated Project Management Unit to oversee these initiatives was also emphasised.
Furthermore, it was noted that the activities for the upcoming year need to be organized with increased focus on the social and ethical pillars, which are two of the three primary pillars of the Clean Sri Lanka initiative.
Secretary and Convener of the “Clean Sri Lanka” Presidential Task Force, Senior Additional Secretary to the President Russell Aponso and Additional Secretary to the President (Clean Sri Lanka) S.P.C. Sugeeshwara were present at the meeting. Senior officers of the three armed forces, including Army Commander Lieutenant General Nilantha Premaratne, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Damien Fernando and Air Force Commander Air Marshal Vasu Bandu Edirisinghe, along with members of the “Clean Sri Lanka” Presidential Task Force and a number of government officials, also participated in the meeting.
