Cabinet approval has been granted for the rehabilitation and upgrading of the road lighting system on the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway, including the Kerawalapitiya Interchange.
The project, estimated to cost Rs. 1.098 billion, will be implemented in two packages through the National Competitive Procurement process. The proposal was submitted by Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake.
According to the Government, nearly 85 percent of the expressway’s lighting system is currently non-functional due to repeated vandalism and theft.
As a first phase, lighting improvements will be carried out at the Peliyagoda, Kerawalapitiya, Seeduwa and Ja-Ela interchanges, as well as along the sections from the New Kelani Bridge to the Peliyagoda Fish Market and from Seeduwa to the Bandaranaike International Airport.
The project is expected to enhance road safety and improve visibility for motorists using one of the country’s busiest expressways.
