British Airways has reintroduced direct flights between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom after more than 11 years, offering special airfares to mark its return to Colombo, the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation announced.
Under the special offer, return tickets from Colombo to London Gatwick in the World Traveller economy class are available from Rs. 255,000, with discounts of up to 10% on fares.
The airline’s inaugural flight arrived in Colombo on October 24. The new service operates three flights a week throughout the winter schedule, using Boeing 777 aircraft.
The service offers three cabin classes: Club World, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller, providing passengers with more travel options between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. It is also expected to strengthen tourism, trade and business ties between the two countries.
British Airways Chief Planning and Strategy Officer Neil Chernoff described the resumption of flights to Sri Lanka after more than a decade as a significant milestone, noting that the service reconnects the country with the airline’s global network.
Hayleys Advantis Managing Director Ruwan Waidyaratne said the resumption of the service marked an important step towards strengthening air connectivity between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom.
Meanwhile, searches for flights from London to Colombo on the airline’s official website, ba.com, increased by more than 10% over the past week.
The renewed direct air connection is expected to provide greater convenience for travellers from the United Kingdom and support the further development of Sri Lanka’s tourism industry and economic activities.
