    President commissions AQOCs on Thursday

    The newly installed ‘Air Quality Observation Centres’ (AQOCs) in the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) Head Office at Battaramulla, the Kandy Central Bus Stand and Biyagama around the Kelani River will be commissioned on Thursday. The CEA in a press statement said the atmospheric air quality would be constantly examined through these centres and that the public would be kept informed on the results daily.

    The centres will be opened digitally by President Maithripala Sirisena at the national function to mark the ‘World Environment Day – 2019’ at the BMICH. “Minimization of air pollution through sustainable forest management,” is the theme of this year’s celebrations. To mark the occasion, an Environment Commemoration Week has been declared by the Government from May 30 to June 5.

    An academic lecture will be delivered by Dr. A.G.T. Sugathapala, Senior Lecturer, Mechanical Engineering Studies Faculty the University of Moratuwa on the topic “Air Pollution and its Adverse Impacts” during the national event. “The ‘Hand Book on Air Quality Process’ and the Sobaketha magazine containing articles on contemporary environmental topics will be presented to the President. A number of programmes such as awareness campaigns on schoolchildren, tree planting campaigns, and promotion of waste recycling have been organized regionally enabling the active engagement of the public,” the CEA said.
