Minister Kariyawasam said that the Sri Lankan Education System needs some more radical changes to meet the international and most advanced standards. Accordingly, subjects will be taught by only highly qualified subject teachers, who earned Degrees and Masters Degrees in the said field. Experienced teachers in that calibre will be issued a licence which simplifies the capabilities for teaching.
“Professionalism and academic knowledge are a must for for teachers,” he noted. Meanwhile, the Minister said that the government will recruit 20,000 graduates to the public service in due course. “Of this amount, 5,000 graduates have already been absorbed to the state service by now and moves are underway to recruit the rest with immediate effect,” he added.
Minister Kariyawasam said more graduates will be recruited to the teacher service aiming to end the teacher shortage. Measures have already been taken under the education sector development programme to minimise teacher and principal shortages in the school system.
