    Investigations into false newspaper report

    A front page newspaper report in a national daily on Thursday (23) had claimed that a doctor connected to the Thowheed Jamaath had sterilized 4000 Sinhala Buddhist women during caesarean operations and that information has been received with evidence and investigations have commenced to arrest the doctor. The newspaper also claims that this doctor had carried out over 7000 surgeries. Commenting on this issue the Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara categorically denied any such investigations being carried out by the CID or any other special Police teams. He also said that Police have not received any such complaints. He made these remarks at a press briefing held at the Media Centre in Kollupitiya, last evening (23).

    This news report has been published without making any inquiries from the Police and that the newspaper and the journalist should take responsibility for the news, further said the Police Spokesman. While into the subject he also mentioned of an investigation carried out by the Kurunegala Police to ascertain the huge wealth amassed by a doctor in Kurunegala. He also said that no complaints have been received in connection with sterilizing women.

    The Police Spokesman further stated that the Acting Inspector General of Police has directed the CID to conduct an investigation into the newspaper report as no such investigations as claimed by the newspaper are being carried out by the Police.

    A Police Constable attached to the Akuressa Police was killed during an illicit liquor raid in Urumuttha, Akuressa on Wednesday evening (22). The suspect involved in the shooting who has since fled from the area has been identified and Police has taken measures to arrest the suspect and the weapon. The deceased Policeman, Kasun Sampath (35) is married and is a father of two children, revealed the Police Spokesman during the press briefing.
