    Burundi, Parliamentary, Presidential Elections Postponed

    June 05, 2015

Bujumbura: Burundi's government has postponed parliamentary and presidential elections that were due for June 5 and 26, respectively, in an attempt to find a solution to the current political crisis pounding the nation.

Presidential adviser for media and information Willy Nyamitwe said parliamentary elections scheduled for Friday will not be held and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will officially announce the new electoral schedule, taking into account the African leaders' recommendations and the terms included in the Constitution.

The INEC president, Pierre Claver Ndayicariye, said that the new dates for elections is pending for approval and will be announced in the next few hours.

According to the media, the delay is a response of Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza to the request made by Eastern Africa Community (EAC) of postponing elections for a month and a half and the demands made by his political opponents.

In a meeting in Tanzania on Sunday, EAC leaders called for the delay of Burundi's elections in an attempt to stop the unrest started last April 26 in rejection to President Pierre Nkurunziza's bid for a third term in office.
