    Sudan Ready for Historic Elections

    April 10, 2015

Yartum: In a press conference held yesterday (09), the head of (NEC) Mukhtar al-Asam said that some 13 million Sudanese are eligible to cast their vote from 13 to 15 April to elect the president of the republic and their MPs for the national legislative assembly.

As the opposition forces boycott the election, only the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) and it allied parties nominated their candidates for the parliament, Prensa Latina News Agency reports said.

The opposition is demanding the formation of an interim government and a permanent Constitution.

But all of them announced their support for the re-election of the incumbent president Omer al-Bashir who has a pending arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court for crimes in Dafur, he took power in a military coup in 1989 and won the elections in 2010.

Vote counting will start on April 16 and the final result will be given on April 27.

Sudan freed two opposition figures today, their lawyer said, in a possible conciliatory gesture ahead of elections.
