Congress leaders led by president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday took out a march from the AICC headquarters in New Delhi to the residence of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to express solidarity with the former Prime Minister, who has been summoned as accused by a court in a coal scam case, The Hindu reported.
Ms. Gandhi, CWC members, party MPs met at 24 Akbar Road following which the Congress president led the march to the residence of Dr. Singh on 3 Motilal Nehru Marg.
"Congress party is solidly standing behind Dr. Singh", Ms. Gandhi said.
"We are here to offer our unstinting support and solidarity to the former Prime Minister. He is known not only in India but across the world for his integrity and transparency. We will do everything within our means to defend him," said Ms. Gandhi.
Dr. Singh had on Wednesday expressed confidence that he will prove his innocence in a fair trial.
“Of course, I am upset but this is part of life. I have always said I am open for legal scrutiny...I am sure the truth will prevail and I will get a chance to put forward my case with all the facts,” Dr. Singh had said.
